Nocturnes at the Musée: Martin Tétreault
Friday, October 5, 2007 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Montréal, September 25, 2007. On the program this coming October 5 from 6 to 9 p.m.:  an evening of surprises, courtesy Martin Tétreault, Montréal deejay and improviser, in a live performance with five turntables and 25 vinyl LPs.

Turntable artist Martin Tétreault, who is well known on the international scene, originally came from the visual arts milieu. His path has been marked by various productions on compact disc and live performances with a range of collaborators. Abandoning musical quotation, the cornerstone of his work since he began his career in 1985, he now explores the intrinsic qualities of the turntable: the motor noise, static, and so on. He also uses needles, prepared surfaces and small electronic instruments.

Martin Tétreault’s music is initially reminiscent of early nineties electro. Then, between subtle sonic derailments and a softly, delicately reverberating melodic depth, it little by little fills the space. Raw, nervous sounds give way to a cosmic atmosphere. Layers of sound slowly spread an entrancing emotion. The repeated scrapings are accompanied by banging sounds, ultimately generating a pure, fluid ambience. With the improvisations, a state of excitement gradually builds. Sensations rapidly increase in a myriad of paradoxical chain reactions: rejection/adoration/refusal/fascination. Listeners really feel the contrasting effect of the melody and the noises wrenched painfully or delightfully from the musical setup. Creating an unexpected concrete music vibe, Tétreault manages to give this bold starting premise a tremendous warmth that insidiously filters into your ears and tickles your eardrums.
